Everyone experiences prejudice, and therefore means of self-expression are important for identity.
I Am From
I am from the peaks of the Blue Ridge
Where snow glistens and sparkles on wintry nights
I am from the taste of green beans and fried chicken
After church on Sunday afternoons
I am from a late night playing music, ringing banjos, fiddle tunes
My mother's laugh, warm dogs and soft cats
I am from loving schoolteachers
Whose knowledge has spilled over me like a bottle of ink
I am from rhododendron and apple cider
Gingerbread houses and handmade clothes
I am from a round of twilight golf
I smell of the freshly mowed greens, my father's praise
I am but a single bud on my family tree, patiently waiting for my time to bloom.
